Types of Snap Modes in AutoCAD?

Snap mode is a feature that attaches a drawing object to the open, high, low, or closing price of the first and last bar it intersects. This allows you to apply a drawing object that automatically "snaps" to the closest price (open, high, low, or close) intersected on the first and last bars.

In AutoCAD, Snap mode is used for avoid excess movement of cursor and also it helps to specify accurate point on object or it use of variable position on plane and object.

Snap Mode is of Two Types: -

1. Grid type
2. Polar type

Grid snap show rectangular interval and polar snap show angular movement of cursor, it moves with angle position.

F9 is the shortcut key used to activate or deactivate snap mode. By using F9 key or snap mode system variable we change setting of snap. In snap mode variable system, we can adjust space between grid, in polar we adjust angle.

Snap spacing is divided into 3 groups:

1. Snap X spacing- It is used to adjust space between X coordinate and value must put in positive no negative value for space
2. Snap Y spacing – It is used to adjust space between Y co-ordinate and value must be positive
3. Equal X and Y spacing- it can be used for both X and Y co-ordinate for equal spacing which show grid is rectangular.

Note- The snap spacing interval may be different from grid spacing intervals.

Polar Snap - It is adjusted by polarsnap system variable. If its value is 0 then it lies on X snap spacing. It is used to track the polar distance or angular distance between two points. It will work only when tracking feature is activate. If tracking is not activated then it will not show any polar distance and it not show exact point which we need.

Snap Type or Style

1. Grid snap - In grid snap, cursor move along vertical and horizontal grid path (shortcut key- SNAPTYPE)
2. Rectangular snap- It is a mixture of snap mode and grid snap when both activate then it is called rectangular snap. (Shortcut Key-SNAPSTYL)
3. Isometric snap- When snap mode is activated and rectangular snap change to isometric snap then cursor show isometric pointer and that moves in all direction as X, Y, Z.
4. Polar snap- When tracking and polar snap activate, the angle position appears on plane from object point.

Grid Style- It consist with 2D context mainly of 3 types

 1. 2D model space- This grid style is used in dotted grid for 2D model
2. Block editor- It sets grid style in dotted for block editor.
3. Shape layout- It sets grid style in dotted grid for shape and layout.

Use of Snap for object- It is used to find out the different point in object and to locate accurate point in object. It has two type Osnap and 3Dosnap.

Osnap- It is used for 2D object it has different point option which help to locate that point in object. the point name given below
Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, Insertion, Intersection, Apparent Intersect, Nearest point, Node, Perpendicular, Quadrant, Tangent, Parallel, Extension.

This helps to locate exact point on object and provide better accuracy in design.

3DOSNAP- It is same as osnap but their function is different because it helps to find out the point on 3D object.
It contains
  • Vertex- snap for closest vertex of 3D object.
  • Midpoint on edge- snap for midpoint of a face.
  • Center of face- to locate the center of face.
  • Knot - use to knot a spline.
  • Perpendicular- use for identify a point which is perpendicular on a face.
  • Nearest to face- locate a point which is nearest to 3D object face.
