Here are some questions that one must prepare before going for an interview for the post of graphic or web designer:

Tell Me Something About Yourself (T.M.A.Y)
I have found over my career that T.M.A.Y is typically the very first question which will place up by majority of interviewer in one or other way. The purpose of this question is to judge the analysis level of the candidate towards himself. One will tell his/her basic and professional qualification while answering this question. Additionally one will tell his/her area of interest towards this question.

Why do you want to work in the field of graphic /web designing or for the desired post?
The question is simple, but one should give an appropriate answer so as to grab the eye of the recruiter. On will suitably answer that working for the desired post/field will be a challenging and beneficial experience form him and his career.

What do you know about the topic/post?
While answering such type of question, one will brief the recruiter about the software proficiency and Adobe credentials.

What is your biggest strength or why should we hire you or what you can bring to our company if we appoint you?
Such question will enable the candidates to polish their qualification to the requirement of their employer. Also where the candidate wants to see himself/herself.  In order to construct an impressive answer one should identify what you are good at in terms of knowledge, experience, skills or abilities. One will diligently say that “I have those attributes which are necessary to fill the requirement of this job”.

How long would you expect to work for the company, if hired?
Never be specific while answering such questions. Instead answer in impressive approach, for example: I’d prefer to go with you guys until the time we both feel that I’m doing a good job or until the time you allow me & believe that I’m doing a good job for the company.

Resume Writing Tips for Web Designers

A resume is more that just a sheet of paper. A resume not only represents an individual but also reflects his or her personality and statement of their ambitious to the outside world. Generally there is no standardize set of rules for writing a resume, but it should be given in a perfect standard format so as to make good impression and  seek the attention of the recruiters. As far as the resume of a web designer is concerned it should invoke the designing skills, creativity, visualization & representation skills, knowledge of designing software and tools etc.

Over my two years experience I found that majority of the people knows what to define but the way to define or outline it in an effective manner isn’t clear to them. Thus here are some resume writing tips for the aspirants who wish to become a web or graphic designer.
  • Creative Resumes: Designers should prepare their resume in a manner as it seems like a portfolio. For this they can make use of assorted template designs available on the internet and edit them using CorelDraw. One can prepare their resume on the plane sheet of paper as well but being a designer creative resume helps illustrates the visualization skills and designing abilities of the candidate.
  • Information in the resume should be presented using the latest style and pattern. For example: on the very beginning of the resume one can provide their passport size photograph, name, e-mail id and post (Web/Graphic or any other).
  •  On the top right corner designers should provide the logos of all the adobe credentials they possess or any other area of proficiency bearing logo.
  • Qualification of a candidate should be given in the reverse chronological order i.e., Professional qualification and Educational qualification. Professional qualification may be further bifurcated into Technical skills and Designing skills.
  • Experience: Web or Graphic designers can fill this particular even if they haven’t obtained any formal experience in their field or are fresher. Candidates can mention the names of the projects undertaken by them under the heading “Key Projects Handled” while pursuing the web or graphic designing course.
  •  Don’t forget to provide the links of all the projects prepared by you in your resume. Providing such links will manifest your work.
A good resume is an advertisement of oneself. Also preparation of resumes varies according to one’s need and qualification. However, I hope you’ll find the above mentioned tips helpful and would really like to employee while preparing your resume for the post of web or graphic designer.

Difference between Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Photoshop is an image editing software. The software is widely used to enhance the existing images and give them more polished and professional look.

Illustrator is vector graphics editor application. It allows the designers to create original illustrations and graphics.
Adobe Photoshop is raster graphics program also known as bitmap graphics. Raster graphics works on the basis of pixels i.e. images consist of pixels in a grid.

Adobe Illustrator is vector based program i.e. the lines are made up of paths and not pixels.
Raster images are resolution dependent i.e. quality of an image depends on its resolution. One cannot stretch an image beyond a certain limit.

On the other hand, vector images are not resolution dependent. Images can be manipulated or resized without compromising on the quality.

Most common raster formats are JPEG, TIFF, BMP and GIF. GIF format is mainly reserved for Web use.

Common vector formats are PDF, CDR, AI, EPS, WMF and PICT (Mac).
Raster graphics are slower to display & print, less economical, less versatile and more onerous to work with.
Vector graphics are much more flexible, versatile, and easy to use.
In comparison to Illustrator, Photoshop has less vector art and drawing tools.

Illustrator has strong library (swatches, brushes, symbols, gradients, patterns, graphic style, etc.). In-fact it’s a complete drawing tool.
In Photoshop, we can create only single page layout.
Eg: Poster, Web ads, Banners, Press ads etc.

On the other hand illustrator allows creation of multi-page layouts in a file.
Eg: Prospectus, Books, Magazines,
       Brochures, Newsletters, etc.
Photoshop is best suitable for small drawing needs, non-line art graphics and UI designing (web).

Whereas Illustrator is best suitable for serious or professional graphic design.
With Photoshop we can do digital painting, matte-painting, coloring, retouching, color balancing, color correction, web and graphics cutouts, etc.
With Illustrator we can create cartoon & logo illustrations, tracking, and creative effects, etc.
